The room was silent. Millie felt as if the walls were closing in on her and her world was coming to an end. She raised her head, saw the devastation on Wilfâs face and knew, even before he spoke, that this was something he couldnât put right for her.
On this she was wrong.
âHe hasnât won, from the business angle at least, Millie. I had no time to look into everything. But I am informed that the Crown Prosecution Service hasnât yet sanctioned Lenâs arrest, therefore affording him the time to get away. However, we do have one saving grace: the papers required your signature too. None of them were properly drawn up. What I got Len to sign was more of a promissory note, but he hasnât realized this. Papers of such magnitude for you to be the legal and binding owner take time to prepare, as all aspects have to be looked into. I hadnât wanted to worry you with this until it was all signed and sealed; neither did I tell Len that it wasnât as yet a fait accompli. I thought to get him to face whatever the crimes he had already committed had in store for him, so that he would realize that any added charges would be catastrophic, and would therefore sign everything. I am sorry that I mistakenly allowed you to think you were the rightful owner of the factory, my dear, but you are not.â
This gave Millie a small amount of relief, as she had envisaged her entire fortune being taken by creditors of the jam factory. But it was short-lived.
âIf we werenât dealing with the Leftons, I would say, Millie, that you were in a good position â businesswise, of course, not personally. And I would be advising you to wait for the company to be on the verge of bankruptcy and then put in a rescue bid. However, I canât see Harold Lefton allowing you to get one up on his son, so he will probably do the same, unless we can keep the whole thing from him â something I cannot see happening.â
Millie didnât want to be talking about all of this. She was relieved, of course, though she wondered if Len would ever realize that heâd blundered and would be the one with a bankruptcy order added to his toll of heinous crimes. But all of that faded into insignificance when she thought of her darling Daniel being gone.
Her voice didnât sound like her own as she said, âThank you, Wilf.â
The words seemed to float from her as the room spun, and concerned voices shouted and then faded, then merged with the sound as if spoken through water, as blackness descended and she accepted the blessed peace it offered and went into its depths.
